Strategic planning for the creation of a new Long
Term Plan to integrate historical, environmental and property management/
operations objectives for the 100 year old landmark institution.
The multiple building compound houses up to 100
visitors, scholars and staff in a unique setting. The Academy grounds and
gardens have an array of botanical and landscape features that are maintenance
intensive. A landscape plan was conceived to create a sustainable program of
maintenance, without compromising the quality and variety of the Garden
experience, including historic subterranean water systems and features.

phbCatalyst was involved in assisting Duke Farms in the design and construction
of an expanded Visitor Center to provide guest amenities, orientation facilities,
and staff support facilities.
In order to demonstrate the foundation’s commitment
to sustainable operations and development, the additional square footage was
provided with re-usable, re-locatable modular trailers customized with “green”
materials. The expansion was sited on a low impact boardwalk deck to minimize
disruption to the existing natural setting.
